MOSCOW 1980
The Moscow games were marked by political boycott on the part of the USA, Germany, Japan and some other countries, protesting against the invading of Soviet troops in Afghanistan. And still the competitions attended over six thousand athletes from 81 countries. 36 World and 39 Europe records, 74 renewed Olympic records. National team of the hosting country had undoubtedly victory in unofficial medal tally (80 gold, 69 silver and 46 bronze medals). The increased authority of Uzbekistan sports, athletes high mastership provided the qualifying for fifteen uzbek athletes to the USSR Olympic team. The achieved outstanding successes, returned home with thirteen medals, including four gold ones.

Magnificently competed Yuriy Kovshov. Following Galina Shamray he could during one Olympiad win two medals: gold and silver. That was an outstanding success of Uzbekistan equestrian school.

The golden tradition of Vera Duyunova successfully continued Larisa Pavlova. For the victory of volleyball team, she was awarded by gold medal. This medal crowned the collection of sport awards of “Miss volleyball” prize’s multiposessor. There are also other precious awards: champion of World’s Universiad in Bolgaria, winner of USSR cup.

Two gold medals won: Olga Zubareva, in staff of team in handball, and Erkin Shagaev, for the victory in water polo team. From 1977 to 1984 this talented athlete permanently competed for the USSR’s water polo team. He was World’s champion, Europe’s champion, twice awarded as winner of World’s Cup in 1981, 1983.

The great success on the Moscow Olympiad came to Sabirjan Ruziev. In staff of foil national team he became a silver prizewinner of the Games. Victory’s list of this gifted athlete is very long. Twice he became a champion of World’s Universiads (1974, 1977), twice Europe’s champion (1974, 1975), three times he was World’s champion (1972, 1974, 1976), possessor of Giovanni’s cups (1974) and Martini’s, multi winner of USSR’s Fencing Championships and Cups. Sabirjan Ruziev Ñàáèð Ðóçèåâ 10 years (1993-2003) presided National Olympic committee of Uzbekistan. His activities were highly appreciated by International Olympic committee, awardded him by Silver Olympic Order. Today, he is serving for the national sports, chairing the National Fencing Federation of Uzbekistan.

The silver medals were also awarded to: Natalya Butuzova, World’s archery champion, three times Europe’s champion, Rustam Yambulatov, Europe’s champion and Cup of Europe and Alexander Panfilov in 1000m.

Uzbekistan played a leading role on the territory of the former Soviet Union in the development of such splendid sport as hockey. In 1977 the Uzbek girls team, compiled commonly of Andijan region’s girls took first place on the All-Union’s competitions, and in 1979 "Andijanochka" became USSR’s champion. Team’s four players: Leyla Ahmedova, Nellya Gorbatkova, Alina Kham and Valentina Zazdravnyh were included in staff of team of Olympic team, which became Game’s bronze prizewinner.

With a merit competed on the Olympiad in Moscow our track and field athletes: Tatyana Byryulina (6th place), Anatoliy Dimov (8th place) and Alexander Kharlov.
