These Games attended a record number of athletes – 7121 from 121 countries. But, because of boycott of group of African countries, as a result of apartheid in South African Republic, 28 African teams left Montreal. Owing to achievements of modern technologies, the Games could watch on TV over one milliard people in the world. There Uzbekistan was represented by male athletes. They were four: Sabirjan Ruziev, Rufat Riskiev, Valeriy Dvoryaninov and Vladimir Fedorov.
The greater success attained Rufat Riskiev, an outstanding uzbek boxer. Gold medalist of the first World’s Boxing championship, winner of international tournaments in USA, Cuba, Australia, Yugoslavia, Spain, he became a silver prizewinner in Montreal. An idol of uzbek boys took on the ring 250 fightings, most of them he won. This courageous fellow played an important role in the development of Uzbekistan boxing school, that began its way from Sydney Jackson, crowned gold medal Rufat Riskiev on the World’s championship in 1974, great Artur Grigoryan’s victories for the title of World’s Boxing champion among professionals and gold medal of Mohammadqodir Abdullaev on the Olympiad in Sydney.
Sabirjan Ruziev on the Montreal Olympiad took in the staff of foilers team the fourth place, but his main Olympic start still was yet to come.
Valeriy Dvoryaninov in team’s set-off in equestrian took an honor fifth place.
Vladimir Fedorov – leader of Uzbekistan football, won bronze medal, competing for national Olympic team of Soviet Union.
