Unfortunately, this Olympic celebration was saddened by the tragedy – members of Palestinian terroristic organization “Black September” took the athletes in from Israel in hostage. Attempting them to discgarge in the airport some athletes and coaches were killed, and there was announced a mourning at the Games. The national team of Soviet Union performed better than all the rest, won 50 gold, 27 silver and 22 bronze medals. Uzbek athletes achieved an outstanding success at the XX Olympic games in Munich. There participated Vera Duyunova, Elvira Saadi, Alzhan Zharmuhamedov, Rustem Kazakov, Nikolay Anfimov and Alexander Yudin. They brought home four gold Olympic medals. It was the second Olympiad and the second gold Olympic medal for Vera Duyunova, volleyball. The second gold medal here was won by Elvira Saadi for the victory in the staff of the national team in gymnastics. This outstanding athlete repeated her success on the Olympiad in Montreal, but by that time she married and left for Moscow.
The hero of Munich Olympiad became Rustem Kazakov. Twice World’s classic Wrestling champion in the final could win the German athlete, who was supported by thousands of fans.
The fourth Olympic medal for Uzbekistan sports in Munich brought Alzhan Zharmuhamedov, one of the Soviet Union’s basketball leaders. This success came to his team in a famous match with Americans, when the victory was achieved at the last second.
Nikolay Anfimov in boxing and Alexander Yudin in cycling could compete only to the quarterfinals. That was an absolute success of our great athletes.
