The Games enlarged their geography. This time they were hosted in Latin America. Five uzbek athletes from the USSR’s delegation participated there. Svetlana Babanina, Natalya Ustinova, Vera Duyunova, Michail Koklyushev, Sergey Konov. The most successful was Vera Duyunova, who after twelve years of Galina Shamray’s success brought to Uzbekistan the second gold Olympic medal, won in volleyball. Leader of national volleyball women’s team led uzbek team to victories on the sport arenas of the USSR. At the same years she competed for the team of USSR, in that staff she won gold Olympic medal at the Games in Munich. Today she successfully chairs Volleyball DUSSH in the capital of Uzbekistan.
Sergey Konov competing with the world strongest athletes took 12th place. But how significant was the Olympiad in his life. In 1968 he established USSR’s record in butterfly swimming 200m, champion of Germany (1968), USSR champion (1969) Europe champion (1970). Swimming for ages charmed this outstanding athlete. In 1975 after left professional sport, he seriously researched science and pedagogical activities, he became candidate of science, senior lecturer, many years supervised the swimming chair of Uzbekistan State Physical Culture Institute.
Michail Koklyushev eleven years has been successfully representing Uzbekistan in the national team of USSR. He achieved outstanding successes – twice World’s cycling champion, six times Soviet Union’s champion, World’s records-holder in 1000m. At the Games in Mexico he competed in the 1967 World’s champions’ quartet race pursuit 4000m. Unfortunately, team could get only 4th place. Today, Michail Koklyushev is working for police department in Uzbekistan.
