The first time, when the Games were hosted by the Asian continent. This time number of athletes decreased (5140), but the number of countries increased (93). Volleyball and judo were included in the Games Sport programme. 35 new world records and 77 renewed Olympic records. The USSR team had more medals, but less gold ones than US Olympic team (USSR – 30, USA – 36). There were 4 uzbek athletes at these Games: Svetlana Babanina, Natalya Ustinova, Sergey Diamidov, Alexey Koklushev. Svetlana Babanina was a participant for two Olympiads, twice awarded Olympic medals. It was at the Games in Tokyo, she was the third in 200m breaststroke and 4x100m medley relay. Svetlana Babanina, a multi champion of USSR, World’s records-holder today works as coach. Together with Babanina the third place in Tokyo won Natalya Ustinova on the results of 4x100m medley relay final. At the VII Spartakiad of USSR schoolchildren her victory in swimming in freestyle 100m was called as “sensation of waterless side”. Further she performed in Mexico, had many outstanding victories at the international sport forums. Many famous pages to the uzbek sports’ history write Sergey Diamidov. He contributed in the team’s set-off in gymnastics, and in Tokyo was awarded silver medal. In the sond half of 60-s Sergey Diamidov was one of the strongest gymnasts of the world. Many times, he became the World’s champion in skids. The famous skids rotate is entered to the history of world gymnastics by his name. He successfully performed on the Olympiad in Mexico, but there he represented another Soviet Republic. Alexey Koklushev was unlucky in Tokyo. The illness, archly knocked on the eve of the start, did not let him to compete in cycling.
